A HAZOP is a structured technique for examining a design or system to identify hazards and potential operability issues, through consideration of deviations from design intent.
A HAZOP aims to:
- Identify hazards associated with operation and maintenance.
- Identify potential system operability problems, specifically, the causes of operational disturbances and deviations.
- Determine appropriate controls and remedial measures.
HAZOP workshops involve a multidisciplinary team, led by a Facilitator, systematically examining all parts of a design or system. Deviations from the design intent are identified and recorded, using a set of guide words.
HAZOPs help to provide an understanding of potential adverse consequences and how these consequences can be avoided through process design / redesign.
